EA mustered FIFA/PS3 improvements, takes playing catch-up seriously

with 4 comments

The Leipzig Gaming Convention is underway, i believe this is the first day, and EA has spilt some details on their next FIFA game, 2008. To make up for their PS3 Madden stumble, the entire FIFA presentation was centered on the PlayStation version. Nevertheless, it’s likely these features will apply to both HD versions. Let’s save me some brainpower and recycle the remainder of Joystiq’s post, with their sorry excuses for humor and insight happily omitted by me.

The game also has an impressive feature list as far as team and league numbers go:

* 30 leagues
* 575 teams
* 15000 players

Each of these players will supposedly use 35% more processing power whilst playing than in any previous versions of the game resulting in 1000 decisions made per second per player. We’re not sure we can make even close to that many decisions per second, as we still have trouble deciding just which flavor of fruit drink to purchase. Will that leave us at a disadvantage?

After seeing all the FIFA 07 videos on YouTube, EA decided it would make it easier for players and integrate video uploads directly into the game. There are no details regarding where they will be uploaded to, but for the moment we’re optimistic about this feature.

Finally, an announcement came regarding a post-launch downloadable extra mode which will allow gamers to play 10 person 5 vs. 5 matches online. Up to 10 consoles can connect online for true member-of-the-team online football action.

Also, as an apology to PS3 EA fans, the PS3 version will exclusively (on the console side) host the FIFA Interactive World Cup 2008, where i imagine thousands upon thousands of footie fans from anywhere but the US will compete to be the best virtual ‘Dinho through the PlayStation Network. Samba at will.

FIFA has always been and always will be umpteenth banana to all editions of Pro Evolution Soccer, but seeing EA take this inequality to heart and try to close the gap between them and the soccer king is a good thing. Not that i’m gonna be buying FIFA 08, but some kid in a distant land who doesn’t know any better will probably enjoy this while i’m kicking Mexican ass in PES 08.

Sidenote: Why don’t WordPress hold some headline contests of some sort? I amaze myself sometimes.
